Sorry, but it's a pet peeve... It is not possible to be "five times smaller" than anything - although it is possible to be "one-fifth" the size. If fractions are too tough (we are talking about cbc journos, here), the sentence could (and should) be recast to indicate that modern birds are five times the size of (or even "five times larger than") those from the preserved 1957 strain.
